Gennady Golovkin warns Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fight could be his last but hopes to seal legacy with trilogy

Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin has warned Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez could be his last fight as a professional.

‘GGG’ will box ‘Canelo’ on September 16, live on BoxNation, for the right to be called the No.1 middleweight in the world and, in all likelihood, pound-for-pound supremacy in the eyes of many fans.

The Kazakh bruiser went without wider recognition for most of his career but high-profile wins over Kell Brook and Daniel Jacobs have now established him as a pay-per-view fighter. But at 35 years of age, Golovkin is unsure how much longer he will fight for.

“I don’t know [how long I will fight on for],” Golovkin admitted. “Maybe after this fight I’m finished, maybe not.

“I feel very good. OK, I’m 35 but I feel like I’m 25. But this is boxing, not soccer, it’s not a game, this is a fight and every fight is very difficult.”

Having waited so many years to receive recognition as a fighter with elite skills as well as devastating power, Golovkin is clearly enjoying the limelight.

A knockout ratio of 89 percent makes a crushing defeat for Canelo feasible though and with it a conclusive answer to who is the No.1 middleweight in the world.

But GGG is hoping to be pushed close and for a famous trilogy to develop and therefore cement his place alongside legendary middleweights such as Sugar Ray Robinson, Harry Greb, Carlos Monzon and Marvin Hagler,

Golovkin claim: “I’m ready [for a potential trilogy vs Canelo], I want. I believe it’s possible.”
