Barely a day after the highly hyped Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight was officially announced, marketing people associated with the promotions of the fight are saying it will dwarf the pay-per-view (PPV) record of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.
The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight which took place in May 2015 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena broke all PPV records in boxing history when it garnered 4.6 million PPV buys valued at over $600 million including gate receipts and other revenues. McGregor’s handler Dana White believes the upcoming Mayweather-McGregor fight will surpass the PPV sales the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight generated in 2015. ?I think this fight is bigger globally than Mayweather-Pacquiao was,? UFC president Dana White said. – There is no indication the Mayweather-McGregor fight will generate even half of the PPV sales record generated by the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. All the talks about the fight surpassing the records of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight are without basis because boxing fans know the fight is a mismatch. The reason why the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight became a box office hit was due to the fact that it was a very competitive match. Both Mayweather and Pacquiao were The Ring’s pound-for-pound best fighters in the world and they were also the top PPV stars at the time of the fight. Discriminating fans wanted to see fighters with special skills honed from years of training and with proven tract record in their craft. Likewise they wanted to see an entertaining fighter with amazing speed and awesome power. These paying fans found all these qualities in the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. While fans did not see what they came for during the fight as both Mayweather and Pacquiao failed to put up a good fight for them, the promoters did their jobs well in selling a good quality match. In the case of the Mayweather-McGregor fight, fans know from the very start that it is a clear mismatch because McGregor has no tract record as a professional boxer not even as an amateur. They also know that the fight is tilted in Mayweather’s favor because he will be facing an exponent who has zero experience as a boxer. McGregor is a great MMA fighter having been a world champion in the sport but boxing is far different from MMA where one relies on his arms and not on his feet and arms to win a fight. Obviously, Mayweather will be hitting two birds with one stone. Aside from the huge revenue the fight is expected to generate owing to McGregor’s immense popularity among MMA fans, he isn’t likely to lose against McGregor who has yet to debut as a professional boxer.
