With GGG-Jacobs’ PPV sales not looking good, promoter touts live gate, international revenue

As early returns indicate that the pay-per-view numbers for last Saturday?s Gennady Golovkin-Daniel Jacobs middleweight title unification bout at Madison Square Garden may not exceed 150,000, revenue from the live gate was nearly double that of Golovkin?s last fight at the Garden against David Lemieux, according to the fight?s co-promoter.

Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who handles Golovkin and Roman ?Chocolatito? Gonzalez ? who stunningly lost his super flyweight title to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai of Thailand in the thrilling co-main event ? said that he was happy with how things went on the business side.

?We?re very happy with the promotion. Clearly boxing fans in attendance and those watching internationally were provided an outstanding evening of entertainment, a goal we strive for with each event,? said Loeffler.

?Our live gate (19,939 fans packed the building) on Saturday night was over $3.7 million, nearly doubling Gennady?s previous fight at Madison Square Garden against David Lemieux in October 2015. The international TV rights fees for the event to over 100 countries generated the highest revenue for any GGG fight.?

Loeffler also said that sponsorships generated the highest revenue for any Golovkin fight, ?particularly with the addition of Hublot and Chivas, both of whom not only sponsored the fight but have designated Gennady as a brand ambassador.

?Additionally, Gennady?s merchandise sales on Saturday of $150,000 also broke his previous Madison Square Garden boxing event record of $124,000 set at the Lemieux fight.?

Loeffler, tried to stay positive on the HBO pay-per-view numbers, saying they are projected to ?well exceed? those of Golovkin?s first pay-pay-event (vs. Lemieux), which were just over 153,000. The exact numbers, he said, are still being calculated.

Golovkin was guaranteed $2.5 million for the fight with Jacobs guaranteed $1.75 million.

Both fights will be replayed Saturday on HBO Sports? World Championship Boxing, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT)
