Friday night at Hialeah Park Racing and Casino in Miami, Florida, WBA Super World super welterweight champion Erislandy Lara (24-2-2, 14 KOs), the clever southpaw from Houston Texas, by way of Guantanamo, Cuba, stopped former champion Yuri Foreman (34-3, 19 KOs), from Brooklyn, New York, by way of Gomel, Belarus, with a crushing left hook at 1:47 of round four.
Lara is no more known for his power than Foreman, and while few picked Foreman to win, even fewer expected him to be knocked out.
?I?m very happy with my performance tonight,? said Lara after the fight. ?He was a little bit awkward, so I had to make some adjustments and we got him out of there. I?m ready to fight the best in the world. I?m tired of mentioning names, they know who they are: Andrade, Golovkin, Canelo, the best. We want to fight the best. Whoever is willing to step in the ring with me, I?m willing to fight.?
Lara may want Golovkin and Canelo, but they may have bigger fish to fry.
Foreman, naturally, was gutted at the loss.
?Of course I?m disappointed,? he said, ?but this is boxing. I got caught with a perfect punch and that?s what happens. I tried very hard to shake it off, but he got me. I have been hit harder in my career, but I take nothing away from him. He?s a very strong puncher in his prime and I give him credit. He was as good as I expected him to be.?
