Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas – Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1, 5KOs) picked up the biggest win of his career when he dominated and stopped Nicholas Walters (26-1-1, 21KOs) in seven rounds to retain the WBO super featherweight title.
A cautious start by both fighters in the first round. They were measuring each other and there wasn’t much action, but Lomachenko was quicker to the target with few minor punches. They were starting to get a little more active in the second round. Lomachenko’s movement and speed was presenting issues for Walters, who was trying to adjust the best he could.
Walters was starting to connect a little bit more in the third when they were fighting on the inside. Lomachenko closed it with a rapid burst of shots. Lomachenko was getting more accurate in the fourth, connecting with fast punches that Walters was unable to avoid. Walters was unable to landing anything damaging to change the fight.
Lomachenko continued to control things with his speed and movement. Walters was doing his best to connect, but still not able to land anything of note. There was an odd moment in the final ten seconds where they both stood there and stared at each other.
Walters was getting outworked and outboxed in the sixth. Lomachenko was throw more punches, accurate shots, and connecting far more often. Walters was not letting his hands go enough, and would land no more than one punch at a time.
Lomachenko was dominating him in the seventh, landing accurate shots and not allowing any counters to connect. Walters was confused and holding on at the end of the three minutes. For whatever reason, Walters was unable to continue after that round and the fight was waved off.
