Unbeaten Detroit light-heavyweight Rico “Suave” Hoye (17-0, 14 KOs) is set to meet Montell “Ice”) Griffin (46-4, 29 KOs) as he takes a step closer to a world title shot when he fights on ShoBox at the Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste. Marie on Sept. 16. The winner will be the mandatory for the winner of the upcoming Roy Jones-Glen Johnson bout for the IBF light heavyweight title.
Joe Mesi’s attorney Stuart Campbell has finally come clean and admitted to the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Mesi suffered brain bleeding but says that Mesi should be allowed to resume boxing because Mesi only suffered a small subdural hematoma, which is bleeding on the surface of the brain due to torn blood vessels and not bleeding from the actual brain itself.
“We do not believe (Nevada’s regulation on brain bleeds) is relevant since there was no bleeding within the actual brain. For such reason we would suggest that Joe Mesi be completely cleared to continue his boxing career.” said Campbell
Manny Pacquiao held a press conference to retract an earlier statement he made that William Bael, the prime suspect in the killing of GMA Super Radyo reporter Jonathan Abayon was a part-time bodyguard under his employment. Pacquiao said that he wants to clear his name totally before going to the US next month to start the physical training for his fight in November with Marco Antonio Barrera.
“He was never under my employ nor was he ever connected to me, my family and close friends. I don’t want to be tagged with a bad boy image because I’m not one. And I don’t want to disappoint thousands of children around the world who look up to me as their idol” said Pacquiao.
U.S. District Judge John Kane has awarded Bernard Hopkins $1.79 million in damages in a breach of contract lawsuit against his former promoter America Presents.
Hopkins was sued by America Presents in February of 1999 after Hopkins sought to end their relationship. The case ended in a mistrial in April 2000 and Hopkins countersued.
Convicted child killer Soulan Pownceby’s controversial Olympic boxing campaign has ended in defeat. The New Zealand fighter, who was jailed for the death of his five-month old daughter in 1995, was beaten into submission by Turkish light-heavyweight Ihsan Tarhan before the bout was stopped after three rounds.
