Mexican counter-puncher Juan Manuel Marquez is still hoping Miguel Cotto will agree to his previous offer to face him at 147 pounds or at catchweight of 148 pounds for his comeback fight after his two-year inactivity due to recurring knee injury.
Marquez is now back to his gym with his strength and conditioning coach Angel “Memo” Heredia in preparation for his possible comeback fight. “Here is the important thing, Cotto is a great fighter and it would be an interesting fight for the fans, but it is also necessary to see what the weight would be. Freddie Roach had mentioned that [Cotto] was able to make the 147 limit – now why can’t he give me [a limit of] 147 if wants to fight with me?” Marquez said. Back in January this year, Roach, who trains Cotto talked about the possibility of Cotto going down to 147 to accommodate Marquez but the seven-time trainer of the year has yet to confirm if he still wants Cotto to revive the stalled talks based on his statement early this year. ?I don?t know if it will go anywhere but it might. That would probably be at 147lbs, I think we can still make that weight. I don?t think Miguel will go any lower than that. 147 to 150lbs would be good,? Roach told Boxing News Early this year Marquez and his handlers had lengthy fight contract negotiation with Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico but the talks fell apart due to weight issues. Marquez wanted to have the fight at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds but Cotto, who has been fighting as junior middleweight could only go down as low as 150 pounds.
