CEBU, Philippines – Jason Canoy made sure that this time, there would be no draw, no controversy; only closure.
In a rematch of a fight that ended in a technical draw due to cuts caused by an accidental headbutt, Canoy scored a technical knockout win over Jetly Purisima to win the Philippine Boxing Federation?s bantamweight championship in the main event of ?Rumble sa Balamban? at the Balamban Sports Complex Friday night.
Fighting before his hometown crowd, the Balamban native out of the Omega Boxing Gym made adjustments to stay away from harm and boxed his way convincingly to the title. After a first round of feeling each other out, Canoy dictated the tempo from the second round onwards, taking the fight to Purisima and landing with his lead jabs followed by right straights.
The fighter from General Santos was on the defensive all fight long but managed to land counter punches that would stop Canoy?s tracks. The pummelling continued with Canoy taking full control of the fight in the fifth round where he rained punches on a game Purisima who didn’t have any replies and was tiring out fast. After the bell to end the fifth round rung, Purisima decided he had had enough and signalled to referee Tony Pesons that he didn?t intend to go on with the fight, giving the TKO win to Canoy.
Canoy bagged the vacant title and gave his career another boost. He improves to 26-6-2 with 19 KOs.
In the supporting main event, Salatiel Amit (9-1-2, 7 KOs), also of the Omega Boxing Gym, knocked veteran Rodel Tejares out in the third round. Freeman ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch:
It was an even first round before Amit dominated the next two rounds. Amit knocked Tejares down in the third round and as referee Teddy Alivio gave Tejares the mandatory eight-count, the boxer from Bukidnon turned his back to give up.
In other fights, Rimon Rima (5-0-1, 4 KOs) knocked Jomar Diana (2-5) out in just 27 seconds of the first round, to score the night?s quickest fight. Mark Vicelles (3-0-1, 2 KOs) of Omega was held to a draw by Rodel Kirk Pelenio (3-1-1, 2 KOs) of the Ablaca Stable. Ponciano Rimandiman (4-4-1, 2 KOs) sent Lenmar Priscillas down twice to score a third round technical knockout.
Ar-Ar Borbon (3-1-1, 3 KOs) won over Roman Getalada by TKO in the second round when Getalada?s corner threw in the towel. In the opening bout, Oliver Genecera (2-0, 2 KOs) also of Omega, knocked Wilber Rota out with a wicked left hook in the first round.
In special exhibition bouts, Jhack Tepora sparred with Ryan Quimbo, while Kenny Demecillo slugged it out with Junie Salogaol. Tepora and Demecillo will be fighting in the next edition of the ?Who?s Next?? boxing series.
Rumble sa Balamban was a fight card of Omega Pro Sports International set up in partnership with the West Cebu Industrial Park and Balamban as part of the town?s activities for its annual fiesta. Among those in attendance with Balamban Mayor Ace Binghay and two-division world champion Donnie Nietes who arrived recently from his latest fight in the United States. Also present were key officials of the West Cebu Industrial Park led by retired Col. Martinez and Windmund Charcos.
