Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao believes that for the proposed Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch to happen, boxing fans should demand it because it could entice Mayweather to get out of retirement if he believes there is enough money to be made.
In an interview with reporters who are covering his return fight against WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas, Pacquiao said Mayweather’s only concern in making the fight is the amount of money he stands to make. “If the fans want it, and he wants it, then I’m open to it. I’m open to any fight,” said Pacquiao, who joined promoter Bob Arum to kick off the press tour from the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. “You know in his heart, he doesn’t have concern for the fans. His only concern is to make money,” Pacquiao added. While Mayweather is more concerned about making more money, Pacquiao said more than making money from his fights, he also wants to entertain the fans. “My concern is not only to make money but how I entertain the people, how I entertain the fans,” he added. Pacquaio is on a three-day US press tour to promote is upcoming fight against Vargas on Nov. 5 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Earlier, Mayweather has admitted he may get out of retirement and fight again ‘if the price is right.’ Pacquiao’s longtime trainer Freddie Roach believes the two elite fighters will face each other again soon. Roach knows that the rematch would still sell because of unfinished issues that need to be settled in order to put closure in the long-running Mayweather-Pacquiao saga. “There?s a lot of money on the table still, and I still think the fight does really well. If we get Mayweather after our next fight, it?s like a dream come true,” he said. Pacquiao is set to resume his training which will mostly take place in the Philippines when he returns to Manila after the brief US press tour.
