DONNIE NIETES vs Edgar Sosa this Sept. 24 will be another great chapter in the storied Phillipines vs Mexico boxing rivalry.
Nietes himself is a prominent figure in this war, as he has repulsed all his Mexican challengers, even going to the extent of defending his title right in enemy territory on consecutive occasions.
Let?s take a look at some of the best performances dished out by Pinoys against their brave Mexican rivals.
In no particular order, they are:
1.) Manny Pacquiao vs Erik Morales II (March 19, 2005)?The first time they fought, Mexican hero Morales prevailed via unanimous decision in a bloody war.
In the rematch, Pacquaio fought a more disciplined fight and started targeting Morales? body early in the fight.
This paid off handsomely as Morales began to fade and eventually succumbed to Manny via technical knockout in 10 exciting rounds.
2.) Manny Pacquiao vs Marco Antonio Barrera ( Nov 15, 2003)?In a career- defining fight, Pacquiao fought for the first time as a featherweight and shocked the world when he defeated the favored Barrera via technical knockout in the 11th round.
3.) Luisito Espinosa vs Alejandro Gonzalez ( March 1, 1996)? Three years prior, Gonzalez had won via stoppage and when Luisito arrived in Guadalajara, he dismissed him as ?no importante.?
Unfazed, ?Lindol? proceeded to dish out a horrifying beating to the shocked Gonzalez and knocked him out in the fourth.
4.) Gerry Penalosa vs Johnny Gonzales ( Aug 11, 2007) ?The legendary Penalosa was past his prime when he challenged Gonzales for the WBO bantamweight belt.
However, the then 36- year old southpaw has never been known for his athletic abilities but rather for his cerebral approach to fights and he proved this again when he knocked out Gonzales with a well-placed, well-timed shot to the liver, in a fight he was trailing on the cards.
5.) Brian Viloria vs Eric Ortiz ( Sept 10, 2005) ?Prior to this fight, Viloria had nearly killed an opponent, Ruben Contreras, sending the latter to a coma after knocking him out in the sixth round.
Viloria was nearly traumatized by it, but thankfully Contreras made a recovery and Viloria dedicated his win over Ortiz to Contreras.
6.) Nonito Donaire vs Fernando Montiel (Feb 19, 2011) ?Coming in to this fight, Montiel was a top rated champion, but Donaire made short work of him, knocking him out with a brutal left hook that had Montiel writhing and squirming on the canvas.
7.) Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez 1 ( May 8, 2004)?Following his seminal victory over Barrera, Pacquiao faced off against another Mexican great.
Marquez didn?t look that great in the first round and was knocked down three times. However he found the werewithal to claw his way back into the fight which eventually was scored a draw.
8.) Donnie Nietes vs Moises Fuentes II ( May 10, 2014) ?Their first encounter was ruled a majority draw but in the rematch Nietes appeared to be a different fighter.
He made Fuentes miss so many times it appeared embarrassing. He also countered beautifully. Nietes knocked down Fuentes several times and in the 9th round finished him off with a brutal right hand.
