RIGHT after his 12-round conquest of IBF junior lightweight king Carlos Hernandez, Mexican superstar Erik Morales said something that ought to make Manny Pacquiao smile.
Morales, the three-division champion whose name occupies the top spot on Pacman’s hit list, recently declared that he wants to fight Pacquiao.
Morales’ eagerness to get a piece of Pacquiao is so strong that he is willing to put off his move to the lightweight division to accommodate the Filipino dynamo, the Pasadena-Star News said.
“I’m ready to move to 135 (pounds), but if a chance occurs for a fight with Manny Pacquiao, that could happen,” said Morales, who now owns the WBC and IBF junior lightweight belts.
Morales, who has won world titles in the junior featherweight (122lbs), featherweight (126), and junior lightweight divisions (130), has earlier expressed his plan to move up to lightweight to win a fourth title.
Pacquiao, on the other hand, is licking his lips on the possibility of a date with Morales. Pacquiao has even said that Morales would even be an easier foe than Marco Antonio Barrera, the Mexican legend whom Pacquiao destroyed in 11 rounds last November.
“I’m not really impressed,” said Pacquiao of Morales’ performance against Hernandez, according to The Star.
“He’s kind of slow and sometimes punches without looking,” added Pacquiao. “I think Barrera is even better.”
But even if the Pacquiao-Morales fight comes to fruition, the blockbuster event could only be staged next year, since Morales is scheduled to fight again this November.
