IN RECOGNITION to his contribution in the world of boxing and in Philippine sports, the municipal government of Murcia unveils the monument of world champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes today, July 20, at the public plaza at 1 p.m. today.
Sports coordinator Elro Villarosa said the event will be headed by Mayor Andrew Montelibano.
The defending WBO Jr. Flyweight champion is also the longest reigning Filipino boxing champion, holding the distinction for more than a decade after breaking the erstwhile record of the late Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde.
Montelibano said Nietes? contribution to Philippine boxing history deserves a tribute.
?Nietes has been a huge influence not only among the Murciahanons, but for the whole country. His achievements will serve as inspiration to young boxers to follow his footsteps,? he said. ?The ALA gym in our town will also be a great instrument to develop new breed of Donnie Nietes.? (HGD)
