Actually, Floyd Sr. said it a little more emphatically than that.
Dontae’s Boxing Nation dropped video of the long time trainer and author of the puzzling book that is Floyd Mayweather in the ring, asking for his take on this past weekend’s war between WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter. While Thurman successfully defended his title via 12 round unanimous decision, the fight was a close and grueling affair, one that ‘exposed Thurman’ according to Floyd Sr.
Thurman, who referred to Mayweather’s self-proclaimed ‘TBE’ as “To Be Extinct”, has openly lobbied for a chance to meet the unbeaten all-time great. This is not something that Mayweather Sr. didn’t already know, as he would generally down talk the idea of bout between Floyd and a prime Thurman. But in the wake of his debilitating escape from Porter (Mayweather Sr. had predicted a dramatic KO victory for Thurman), the combat vet appeared to almost salivate at the idea of facing Thurman.
“I’ve been in the game too long and I see too many flaws,” said Sr., before catching Thurman with an overhand quote. “I know for a fact Floyd would [punish] his ass.”
While never known for being shy, Sr. spoke with the kind of nonchalant and dismissive swagger that just may convince “Money” to offer the Clearwater, Florida product a chance for a ticket in the Mayweather Sweepstakes. Pressed a little further on how Floyd would go about his business if they fought, Sr. leaned into the camera with glee, almost as if the idea of Floyd facing Thurman was like being asked to compete against someone in the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
“Thurman– I got a real good note on him, he loads up when he gets ready to throw every punch,” spilled Sr. “He telegraphs every punch. Floyd would eat somebody alive like that.”
Its an interesting take from the elder Mayweather, who guided his son to victory over a pedestrian and shopworn Andre Berto last September. The bout lifted Mayweather’s record to a gaudy 49-0, and while the former pound-for-pound champion declared his retirement, word out of Las Vegas is that he’s amp for a return. What was even more striking about Sr.’s take, is that he indicated Floyd would not only stop Thurman- but clown him in the process.
“Look here… Floyd would be talking in his ears man. Telling him what the next punch he’s gonna get hit with. That’s what Floyd would be doing with him. Telling him, “You fool! You stupid fool!! Did you really think you was gonna hit me?! Huh?? Bop, bop, Bam!!! Overrrrrr….”
