Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. has impressed his trainer Freddie Roach with his perfect attendance since he started training at the Wild Card Gym for his return fight after almost a year of inactivity due to injury.
Chavez (49-2-1, 32 KOs), has reunited with Roach after they split in 2014 over Chavez’ declining performance brought about by irregular workouts and deviation from training rules. “Thirteen days out of thirteen. He came in thirteen days in a row and has not let me down in any workouts. He arrives every day, on time and is working very hard,” Roach said. Chavez had won all his fights since turning pro in 2003. His first loss came on his 46th fight against Sergio Martinez which took place at the Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, Nevada in Sept. 2012. After his unanimous decision loss to Martinez, the 30-year-old son of legendary boxer Julio Chavez, Sr. scored a back-to-back unanimous decision victory over Brian Vera with the second fight held at the Alamodome in San Antionio, Texas, last year. In April last year, Chavez lost to Andrzej Fonfara via a technical decision in a non-title fight held at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Three months later, Chavez scored unanimous decision win against Marcos Reyes in another non-title fight held in El Paso, Texas. Chavez is set to face either Gabe Rosado or J’ Leon Love next month but nothing has been finalized yet as talks are still ongoing. “His next fight could be in Texas, or here in Los Angeles,” said Roach to ESPN Deportes, stating that Chavez’s return could by on July 16 or July 23. “We are considering two opponents and one of the possibilities is J’Le?n Love,” he added. Rosado has won his last two fights (against Joshua Clottey and Antonio Gutierez) after losing via TKO against David Lemieux at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York in 2014 while J’Leon Love has won four straight fights since losing to Rogelio Medina in 2014.
