The biggest fight that can be made in boxing is a showdown with Mexican superstar Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez and unbeaten knockout artist Gennady ?GGG? Golovkin. With both fighters holding portions of the middleweight title, it appears the two are destined to meet sooner than later. However, controversy regarding the contracted weight has put a snag in negotiations.
Nevertheless, the two sides struck a deal to have interim fights before a potential blockbuster meeting in September. And it appears that both sides are making some movement in securing a date and a venue for this fight.
Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Alvarez under his Golden Boy Promotions umbrella, recently met for three hours with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in an effort to place his young star in a fight at the massive AT&T Stadium before the end of the year.
?[Golovkin] is a possibility [for AT&T Stadium], obviously it came up,? De La Hoya told the LA Times about his meeting with Jones. ?Is he going to fight him? Absolutely, that?s no issue whatsoever. But the question is when. Our thoughts are that the fight is going to eventually happen.?
Canelo is preparing for his May 7 bout with Amir Khan that will take place at the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. All signs point to the idea that Canelo-GGG would take place should Alvarez win and Golovkin does the same against Dominic Wade on April 23.
Golovkin?s promoter, Tom Loeffler confirmed to Yahoo Sports the idea that Canelo-GGG could take place at AT&T Stadium.
?We?re just waiting for the right fight to go to either location,? Loeffler said while mentioning that there are plans to meet with executives at the MGM properties to bring Golovkin. ?With the new arena, Las Vegas could be huge but Jerry Jones has also mentioned bringing Canelo-GGG to his stadium. Those are the two top contenders for the fight. We?d have to work out the details with Golden Boy and Canelo but that?s where we think it is going to take place.?
Loeffler believes that as long as contract negotiations between the two sides go smoothly, the fight will take place this year. But he?s also weary of the weight issue that has plagued the conversation ever since Alvarez won the lineal, WBC and The Ring middleweight titles when he defeated Miguel Cotto last November. While Golovkin remains committed to the fight happening this year, it appears that De La Hoya isn?t as quick to confirm GGG will be Alvarez?s next opponent. He still has concerns in regards to building both fighters up to make the fight as big as possible.
?As you know, we have to build this fight up to be the next super-fight. And, yes, it will be the next super-fight,? De La Hoya said. ?The difference with this one [and Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao] is there will be action, there will be knockdowns ? probably a knockout ? so it?s a matter of focusing all of our energies on May 7 with Amir Khan and then we?ll take it from there.?
There?s always a possibility this will drag out like the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations. Although it pained fight fans to watch it take over half a decade to come to fruition, Mayweather-Pacquiao did end up obliterating all PPV records and De La Hoya would like nothing more than to one up his former nemesis.
