Former two-time Heavyweight Champion of the world Tim Witherspoon spoke to WBN this week.
Witherspoon is up there with the greats in the heavyweight division, famously knocking out Frank Bruno and pushing Larry Holmes all the way.
In the first of an ongoing special, the former WBA and WBC World Champion has weighed in on his opinions on some of the current heavyweights in the UK.
Witherspoon on Tyson Fury
“Tyson Fury is a cool guy, I like him. He has a really awkward but good style and I picked him to beat Klitschko. I think he is the best Heavyweight out there at the moment and he would be Deontay Wilder for me.”
Witherspoon on Hughie Fury
“Hughie is a really good fighter. He has impressed me a lot. His style is not as awkward as Tyson’s but it is still as effective. I think Hughie is already one of the top Heavyweights in the world at the moment.”
Witherspoon on David Haye
“Haye should never have retired when he did. I think that hindered his career. He could of been like Frank Bruno. He can be a champion again definitely. I think De Mori froze against him.”
Witherspoon on Anthony Joshua
“He is a nice guy, I like him. I think he needs to work on his defense though. He needs to work with someone who can show him how to slip punches. He is a good fighter but he needs to work on his defense in order to be the best.”
Witherspoon on David Price
“I like David Price, he has a lot of potential but needs an experienced coach and hasn’t been managed well. I would love to work with David Price as with the right coaching he could be up there with the best.”
“I like all the British fighters and I want them to do well. I like it over in the UK and I’m looking forward to coming back over in March. I’d love to work with the likes of David Price or Anthony Joshua in the future. I feel they could both benefit from my experiences.”
Tim was asked how he compares his era to the current era of heavyweights,
“It was a lot lot harder when I was boxing. If I was boxing now I would have been heavyweight champion of the world no doubt.”
