WBC flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam is open to the idea of a title unification with newly-crowned IBF champion Nanito Donaire if the right offer lands on the table, his manager Piyarat Vachirarattanawongse said. Filipino Donaire, 24, clinched the coveted belt after an upset knockout victory over holder Vic Darchinyan in the United States at the weekend.
Piyarat said that he would love for Pongsaklek to take on Donaire (18-1).
”If they offer us a very lucrative deal we would want the fight,” said Piyarat.
”Pongsaklek can fight anyone and anywhere in the world, it just depends on the offer. I think Pongsaklek is better than Donaire so it is up to Donaire to challenge us.
”We are ready to fly to the Philippines if they pay Pongsaklek a handsome purse.”
Darchinyan, 31, had recently challenged Pongsaklek with a US$250,000 deal to fight in the US only to lose for the first time in his 28-fight career.
Pongsaklek (65-2, 34KOs) is scheduled to make the 18th defence of his WBC belt against Naito Daisuke (30-2-2, 20KOs) in Japan next Wednesday.
Piyarat said that he was wary of Naito, even though Pongsaklek has beaten him twice already.
”Boxing abroad is not easy at all,” said Piyarat. ”Naito is more committed than before and anything can happen.”
Pongsaklek is pocketing US$100,000 for the fight.
If the Nakhon Ratchasima native is able to beat his challenger, he will have two more defences before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, WBC vice-president and Asian Boxing Council chairman Kovit Bhakdibhumi met with Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani to discuss title shots for Thai fighters to mark the occasion of His Majesty the King’s 80th birthday.
Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) governor Kanokphan Julkasemsaid that the fights could be held at the 7,000-capacity Hua Mark Indoor Stadium in November.
Additionally, the SAT is going to give financial support to host the fights, he said.
