Op-Ed: Why fans would prefer Bradley-Cotto over Pacquiao-Bradley fight

While WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley could be making more money in a third fight against Manny Pacquiao, boxing fans would rather watch Bradley face Miguel Cotto for his next fight as there is nothing new to see in the proposed trilogy.

Bradley, who is coming off a TKO win over Brandon Rios last Nov. 7, isn’t particularly upbeat on a third encounter with Pacquiao. He even wished that Crawford would have Pacquiao for his next fight. “I want to see Crawford get that Manny Pacuqiao fight,” said Bradley, who is a close friend to the younger boxer, in a separate Boxing Scene report. “He’s the next superstar in boxing, and I want to see if Crawford can dethrone the great Manny Pacquiao.” he said. Bradley will be in Puerto Rico Friday to do commentaries on the Donaire-Juarez fight at the Roberto Clemente Colesium in San Juan. His promoter Bob Arum has earlier said that an announcement on Pacquiao’s next opponent would likely take place on the day of the Donaire-Juarez fight and it is possible that Pacquiao would name Bradley as his next foe. “Right now we are negotiating. But we do not know if we are going to take the [Pacquiao] fight or not,” Bradley said to El Vocero. I’m here to work on the TruTv Card, with Felix Verdejoa and Nonito Donaire. But of course I am also here to discuss business here,” he added. Bradley said a Cotto fight is something new to him knowing he’s bigger and probably stronger than him. He also acknowledged Cotto’s accomplishments and wished that his promoter can make arrangement for the fight, Cotto has one more fight left with Roc Nation Sports in three-fight contract he signed with the promotions company this year. Cotto has been Bradley’s stablemate at Top Rank and securing a fight with him won’t be a problem for Arum as the Top Rank promoter has a good business relations with Roc Nation Sports despite disagreements in the past. “I think anything is possible especially if you have a business person like Jay Z and have the other side, as in my case, a business person like Bob Arum, I think anything is possible and I think the two companies will find a way to do things if they really want a fight. Cotto is a great fighter, a great name. He is a living legend.” Bradley said. Bradley may have shared fans’ apprehension about a third fight with Pacquiao knowing that there is not much to offer the fans except perhaps Teddy Atlas, his new trainer. The proposed Bradley-Cotto fight would be easier to sell than the Pacquiao-Bradley fight because it offers the fans something new which they could not see in the proposed trilogy.
