WBA (Super), IBO and interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin likens his upcoming fight against David Lemieux to a street fight as they inch closer to Saturday’s big event at the Madison Square Garden (MSG) in New York.
In a recent open workout prior to the MSG weekend event, Golovkin (33-0-0, 30 KOs) said his New York encounter with Lemieux would be a good test for him as he prepares for more challenging fights ahead. “This is going to be like a street fight,” he said. “He has a good style – almost like an amateur style. I will beat any style – amateur style or brawl style. He will be a good test for me,” he added. Golovkin acknowledges that Lemieux has become smarter and is feeling like a champion because he is in fact a champion being the IBF middleweight titleholder. “Lemieux is a champion and he feels like a champion and this is a unification fight. I think he is ready for a unification fight and he understands the situation. He is smarter now because of his experience in his recent fights.” he said. In his open workout statement, Golovkin appears confident of beating Lemieux (34-2-1, 31 KOs) with relative ease saying the fight could be over in three or four rounds. “It is very interesting for me because right now he is a star. With power alone, he could go maybe three or four rounds with me. If he boxes he could go 12 rounds. Every second is very important – every round – every step,” he said The Golovkin-Limieux fight has attracted thousands of boxing fans as shown in the huge sales turnout of tickets for the weekend event which also features the Roman Gonzales-Brian Viloria title fight.
