Op-Ed: Gennady Golovkin likely to face Miguel Cotto early next year

A win by Gennady Golovkin over David Lemieux in their Oct. 17 bout at Madison Square Garden in New York could lead to a possible showdown against Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico early next year.

Cotto is facing Canelo Alvarez on Nov. 21 and it is likely that the Puerto Rican boxing star would win the fight based on Freddie Roach’s prognosis. Roach’s prediction could be self serving being the trainer of Cotto but there is evidently a semblance of truthfulness to what the perennial “Trainer of the Year” is saying. ?He?s a little bit of a lazy guy, and he doesn?t train that hard? Roach told Sweet Science’s Michael Woods ?He trained at Wildcard West?I own that gym. I know, when he trained there, how many times he showed up, and how many times he didn?t.? ?The kid?s not a disciplined fighter, and my guy is. We?ll break him down in the early rounds, and take him out in the later rounds?I promise you!? Roach added. While Cotto could indeed emerge victorious over Alvarez in their scheduled Nov. 21 fight at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, Golovkin must win over Lemieux, who is a tough opponent with only two defeats in his pro career. Cotto (40-4-0, 33 KOs), is coming off three straight wins since losing to Austin Trout in 2012. In the same year Cotto lost his WBA (Super) Light Middleweight title to Floyd Mayweather via a unanimous decision. Golovkin (33-0-0, 30 KOs), is fresh off a win over Willie Monroe, Jr. last May at theThe Forum, Inglewood, California. The 33-year-old unbeaten champion from Kazakhstan has been eyeing a lucrative fight against either Cotto or Alvarez and it appears that he is getting closer to his goal, provided he gets past Lemieux on Oct. 17.
