GEN. SANTOS CITY?Overconfidence cost fast-rising prospect Daryl Basadre his fight with Cebuano slugger Kenny Demecillo along with the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Oceania bantamweight strap three months ago.
The loss was a tough pill to swallow, but the 23-year-old Basadre treats it as a learning experience needed for any young fighter to grow and become better.
Basadre will try to avenge that loss when he takes on Demecillo in a rematch for the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight belt today in the main event of Brawl at the Mall – “Revenge or Revalidation” at the Gaisano Mall of Gen. Santos City.
“I was overconfident. I underestimated his skills. It was a lesson learned. But now, I assure you I will win the fight,” Basadre told Sun.Star Cebu.
The 23-year-old Demecillo dropped Basadre with a left hook to the head and finished him off with a barrage of punches that forced referee Ramuel Ovalo to stop the fight in the second round. Basadre believes the stoppage was early and that he could still continue.
Demecillo wants to prove that he indeed won that fight with a convincing win in the rematch.
“If given a chance to knock him out, I will knock him out. But I won’t promise anything, I will just give everything I have in this fight,” said Demecillo.
World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia featherweight titleholder John Vincent Moralde (13-0, 7 KOs) faces off with Jerry Castroverde (6-1, 3 KOs) in a 10-round non-title fight in the main supporting bout.
Undefeated prospect Rinmar Metuda (7-0, 3 KOs) guns for the vacant WBF Asia-Pacific featherweight strap against Jason Tinampay (6-1) in one of the featured fights.
In the undercard, Markquil Salvania (8-0, 2 KOs) faces a stiff test in journeyman Philip Parcon (26-21-3, 8 KOs), Mike Plania (6-0, 3 KOs) takes on Roland Magluyan (4-6-2), Raymond Tabugon (16-3-1, 6 KOs) squares off with Jong Sabellina (5-10, 1 KO), Engelbert Moralde (8-2, 6 KOs) trades leathers with Joy Formentera (6-1, 4 KOs), hard-hitter Reymart Gaballo (9-0, 7 KOs) is up against Frejun Dela Cruz (2-5-1), knockout artist Jenny Boy Buca (9-2, 9) locks horns with Michael Padayag (3-4-1) and Vinz Paras (2-0, 2 KOs) slugs it out with Saddam Barambangan (3-8-1, 2 KOs).
