Donnie Nietes: Front and Center

Hopefully this October 17 fight card will be televised and if so, mark it on the calendar. The action is guaranteed?

?He (Pinky Alejo) likes to go inside and is a good counterpuncher? He has a strong straight and hook?I can?t afford to be complacent.??Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes

??upon learning that I?m going to fight in the US, I said to myself that this is it! This is the moment I?ve been waiting for and I won?t let this opportunity pass away? This is the fight I?ve been dreaming of and I?m so happy that it will finally come true. Fighting before Filipino fans and a foreign crowd in the US means so much for me???Nietes

?We wanted someone from the top 10 and he?s [Alejo] rated number 7. He hasn?t lost since December 2009 so this should be an interesting fight.??ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer

Quick, after Manny Pacquiao, who is the most popular Filipino boxer?

If you said Donnie ?Aha? Nietes (36-1-4), you got it right. Nietes, a thinking man?s fighter who blends power and technique with a high ring IQ, most recently displayed his skill and dominance as the world?s number one 108-pound fighter when he retained the WBO light flyweight title by defeating tough Mexican challenger Francisco ?Titanium? Rodriguez at Cebu City Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu, Philippines. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnGc4z-GWrA

Next out, he meets Mexico?s Juan ?Pinky? Alejo (21-3) for the WBO World light flyweight title StubHub Center in Carson, California on October 17. The historic Pinoy pride event is billed as PHILIPPINES VS. THE WORLD as several other rugged Filipino fighters are on the card including Jason ?El Nino? Pagara (36-3), ?Prince? Albert Pagara (24-0), and Mark ?Magn?fico? Magsayo (11-0).

As for Pinky, he got off to a terrible pro start losing his first three?two by KO?but he has since won 23 in a row and uses counterpunching and a nice Mexican-style left hook as his chief weapons. However, he has never fought anyone like Aha before and it could be a bookending experience for him.

This will be Nietes? US debut and his seventh fight in a row against a Mexican opponent. In all, he has beaten 14 Mexicans and has even fought and won in Mexico twice. Indeed, while he has feasted on Mexican opposition; on the flip side, his r?sum? is conspicuous by the absence of Japanese.

?Aha? has etched his name in stone as the longest reigning Filipino world champion having broken the legendary Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde?s record, but relatively few have heard of him outside of Asia. It?s always ?Manny, Manny, Manny,? but this warrior from Negros Occidental has never lost a title fight since beating Pornsawan ?The Tank? Porpramook (20-0) back in September 2007. Before that, ?Ahas? was the WBO Asia Pacific champion. His only loss was a highly controversial SD in Jakarta to Angky ?Time Bomb? Angkotta (12-2) but the ?Bomb? came in six pounds over the weight limit for the fight that took place way back in 2004. He also avenged a 2013 draw with Moises Fuentes by knocking out Fuentes a year later in a savage affair. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnGc4z-GWrA
