“My thoughts on Mayweather fighting Berto…he’s trying to get a KO. Berto doesn’t have the best chin in the world. I mean, he has punching power, but he doesn’t have the best chin and he’s not the best fighter he could’ve fought. I mean, there’s a lot of different people he could’ve fought,” stated three-division former world champion Shane Mosley, who shared his thoughts on next Saturday’s clash between undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and former world champion Andre Berto. According to Mosley, Mayweather only chose to fight Berto in hopes of scoring a knockout victory, something that he hasn’t done in the past 4 years.
“I think Mayweather wants to get the KO because he hasn’t knocked anyone out in such a long time. He’s been running and holding all the time. I mean, that’s the only reason I can think of. Berto could try to hit him here or there, whatever, maybe get a lucky shot, but the end result is that Mayweather just wants to show people he can knock people out. Berto would be the perfect candidate for that,” Mosley explained. In fact, as far as Mosley is concerned, Mayweather’s fight with Berto is simply part of a master plan to retire undefeated, come out of retirement, and set up a much bigger fight to break Marciano’s 49-0 record.
“I never thought this would be his last fight. Maybe what he wants to do is he wants to get this fight, knock Berto out, retire undefeated, 49-0, and then come back and fight some more. He wants to make sure that he doesn’t lose by fighting Berto, then retire, and then come back. He might fight Berto and then retire and then come back to fight Pacquiao or whoever,” Mosley continued. Mayweather, however, has maintained that September 12 will be his final fight. Nevertheless, it doesn’t change the fact that Mosley strongly believes that Andre Berto is the perfect opponent for Mayweather to secure a KO.
If I fought Berto, you know what would’ve happened. You know what I do and you know what type of chin I got, so Berto’s not knocking me out. I’m the knockout artist. I’m the one that hits and knocks people out. What would happen probably is I’d be knocking Berto out in a couple of rounds. He’ll throw a few flurries and try to fight me, but all of a sudden, I’d be walking him down and lowering the boom on him. I punch a lot harder than Floyd,” Mosley added. “Berto’s chin is not good either. I mean, he got knocked out by Soto Karass. Robert Guerrero almost knocked him out. Victor Ortiz knocked him down. I mean, Mayweather has to fight him if he wants to get a a knockout. People always say that he’s holding and running, but with Berto, he’s not going to hold and run. If he don’t get hit with nothing, he can just stand right there.”
