Andre Berto will be given the opportunity of a lifetime on September 12, when he’ll face off with Floyd Mayweather in the final fight of Mayweather’s unblemished career. And that means that Berto is going to enter the fight as a heavy underdog.
Yet according to the 31-year-old Berto (30-3, 23 KOs), he’s got the tools to end Mayweather’s run at history. If Mayweather wins, he’ll match Rocky Marciano’s undefeated 49-0 record, but Berto isn’t counting on that happening.
“We’re here. It’s my time to see him. He can have his ‘MayVinci’ code because we put in the work. The whole team is confident. I’m going to do what I do,” Berto told boxingnewsonline.net. “We worked on a lot of different things at camp. I have the speed to keep up with him. I have more power.”
Despite Berto’s confidence, all signs point to a Mayweather win. In Berto’s last six fights, he’s gone 3-3. But according to Berto, he’s never had a better camp leading up to a fight.
“I’ve had a tremendous training camp, a long camp but a tremendous camp,” Berto said, according to Sky Sports. “I’ve never run harder. I’m definitely in the best shape that I’ve ever been in.”
And, again, Berto came back to his power and athleticism, which he believes will give Mayweather issues on fight night.
“The thing with Floyd is, most guys he fights aren’t as athletic as he is. But I am…If you come at Floyd fast but don’t have a plan and don’t have good footwork, it’s too easy for him. If you have a guy that’s as athletic as him, it gives him problems,” Berto told boxingnewsonline.net. “There is a lot more to me than just walking guys down. I have speed, I have power, I have a crazy uppercut, I can move to the side. There are a lot of ways I can get it done.”
Of course, Manny Pacquiao’s speed wasn’t enough to overwhelm Mayweather in the Fight of the Century. On September 12, we’ll find out if Berto brings something to the table that Pacquiao was lacking.
