Brian Viloria exuded supreme confidence when he came face-to-face with Nicaraguan punching machine Roman Gonzalez yesterday in Los Angeles to drumbeat their much-awaited world flyweight title fight on Oct. 17 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Looking svelte and suave in a dark-colored coat and tie, Viloria looked directly into Gonzalez?s eyes and seconds later shook the Latino?s hands, hugged before going separate ways.
Reporting on site during the press conference in downtown LA, US-based ortho Ed Dela Vega, who customizes the mouthshield of Manny Pacquiao and the fighters of ALA Boxing, said Viloria is upbeat about his chances of scoring an upset.
?Apparently the champion has yet to meet a fighter of Viloria?s punching power and tons of experience,? wrote Dela Vega. ?And, (Viloria) would not be easy for him (Gonzalez).?
Viloria, 34, has a 36-4 record with 22 KOs, while Gonzalez, 28, sports an unblemished 43-0 with 37 KOs.
Regarded by many as one of the best fighters in the world regardless of weight, Gonzalez will be making the third defense of the World Boxing Council flyweight crown against Viloria, a Hawaii-born puncher of pure Filipino extraction.
Gonzalez has put his buildup in motion but he will be spending the vast majority of his training in Big Bear, California, a facility almost 7,000 feet above sea level.
Viloria, meanwhile, has set up camp at Freddie Roach?s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood with the hall of Fame cornerman himself and his chief assistant, Filipino Marvin Somodio, presiding over his preparations.
