On Saturday night, in Brooklyn, New York, former junior welterweight champion Danny ?Swift? Garcia (31-0, 18 KO?s) stopped former two-division titlist Paulie Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KO?s) in the ninth round of their welterweight bout.
The bout was part of a ?Premier Boxing Champions? show on ESPN and after a slow start, Garcia picked up the steam and repeatedly hurt Malignaggi. Referee Arthuer Mercante Jr. waived the match off at 2:22 of the round, with Malignaggi still on his feet.
The attention now turns to what is next for Garcia, as the Philadelphia native is still in the prime of his career and eyeing all options, including possible fights with Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.
Shortly before the match we caught up with rugged Detroit brawler Lanardo Tyner, who helped Garcia get ready for his bout with Lamont Peterson in April. Tyner is now back in Las Vegas for a third training camp helping Floyd Mayweather get ready for his Sep. 12 date with Andre Berto.
There is often talk fo Mayweather vs. Garcia and it?s a realistic option if Floyd continues on after 2015.
Tyner, unlike several of Mayweather?s other sparring partners this camp, picked Garcia to win ahead of his duel with Malignaggi but doesn?t seem to think he could hang with Mayweather.
?It was great to work with Danny but he can?t see Money May,? Tyner told Hustle Boss.
