I recently was afforded an opportunity to speak to highly regarded UK trainer Peter Fury, to discuss Tyson Fury?s upcoming world title fight against Wladimir Klitschko. Fury shares his thoughts on the fight coming together and what Tyson needs to do to win October 24th. Peter also talks about getting a decision in Germany, and if they are looking for a knockout. Additionally Fury shares his views on Mayweather-Pacquiao and Carl Froch retiring. Here is what Peter Fury had to say.
Robert Brown: You?ve training Tyson Fury for his fight with Wladimir Klitschko. How are you doing Peter?
Peter Fury: I?m doing very good, just looking forward now to the fight. Wladimir and Tyson will go head to head for the first time and it?s all systems go.
Robert Brown: What does Tyson have to do to win this fight? Will we be seeing different things from Tyson that we haven?t seen before?
Peter Fury: Tyson?s only shown two or three gears, and he?s got ten gears. The thing is, we?re lucky in that respect because Tyson?s not really shown what he really can do. He will be stepping up, he?ll be a lot different than he?s ever been before. We?re really looking forward to it.
It?s time now for Tyson to prove to the world and all the doubters that he does belong where he belongs. On the 24th of October, all these answers will be told. There?s no more talking, I?m over the moon. We got the fight and I just cannot wait, because on the 24th of October, people are going to realize exactly where and how Tyson Fury stands in the heavyweight division.
Robert Brown: Tyson is very good at switching stances and Wladimir likes to dictate the pace and the rhythm. Does Tyson have to force the pace against Wladimir? Are we going to see a bit of southpaw in this fight?
Peter Fury: It?s like anything else, Tyson?s going to do in this fight what he?s never done in any previous fights. That?s as much as I can tell you because obviously we?re not going to give our plans away. Tyson is not going to box anything like he?s boxed in the past, I can tell you that much.
You?re going to see a world class heavyweight. Forget the other fights he?s boxed, that was just the necessary game plans to get the job done. This is for the heavyweight championship of the world and you?re gonna see a very good fight.
I believe Wladimir is a great champion, I take nothing from him at all, but we?re not looking to win this fight on points, we?re looking for a dramatic fight and a dramatic finish to it. Either he will win it like that or he won?t. That?s where we?re coming from, we?re not looking to rely on the judges ? especially with Germany?s record with previous world title fights.
Klitschko is the undisputed champion of the world, you can?t expect to go out there and have a close fight and Tyson having his hand raised, that?s not happening. They will give it to the champion, even if the champion?s two or three rounds behind, they?ll give it to the champion. We know where we?re standing, we?re not going to be complaining that we?ve been robbed or all that bullshit, we?re going to take him out. That?s what needs to happen, so we?re not going to leave it in the hands of anybody.
Robert Brown: I want to get your thoughts on the biggest fight of this year, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. How much do you believe Manny Pacquiao in terms of his injury? How much better would he have done if he was one hundred percent?
Peter Fury: I don?t think anything. I?m not really a man of excuses. They went in there, they had a fight for fortunes of money and then to say after the fight, ?I got a bad shoulder,? and then he said he thought he won the fight. Is he blind? He got his ears boxed totally off him, then to come up with a shoulder injury.
If you knew about the shoulder before you got in there, cancel the fight, postpone it. Let the public know you have a niggling shoulder, don?t cry afterwards. It?s almost like saying, ?Tyson?s got the flu in sparring,? but he goes in there and loses to Klitschko in a few rounds. Do you think I?m going to walk up and say, ?He lost because he had the flu?? Take it like a man.
If you?re gonna get in there and fight, there?s no excuses, get in there and fight and that?s it. You know what you?re getting in to, don?t complain about it afterwards because you make yourself look about an inch tall doing it.
Robert Brown: What are your thoughts on the retirement of Carl Froch? Can I have some reflections from you of his Hall of Fame career?
Peter Fury: He?s very tough, he?s got a good chin and he?s a good fighting man. When he?s under pressure, he offloads and he fights back. He?s got a natural fighting instinct, and that?s the difference. He?s got fighting heart.
Skill is one thing, but you have to take your hat off to him because he?s got pure dedication and determination, and that?s made up for the lack in skill set. The sheer heart and determination in the way he trains and the way he?s lived the fight game, he deserves full credit.
He deserves to be up there, he?s fought the best in the world again, he?s not ducked anybody, he?s fought everybody. If he wants to retire, why not? He?s done as good as anybody else, if not better. He deserves his rightful place up there, but I do think if the right fight came along and the money came along, I think he would come back out of retirement.
Maybe he?s just pissed off because the types of fights he?s being offered don?t really do anything for him. He?s not short on money, I think he?s very comfortable. Unless something really came along that really interests him, I think he could remain in retirement. Good luck to the man, he?s healthy and he?s achieved great things in boxing.
