Shane Mosley Sr. never failed a drug test, but he testified under oath to a grand jury investigating the Victor Conte BALCO scandal that he had taken undetectable steroids and injected himself with EPO sold to him by Conte during training camp for his 2003 rematch with Oscar De La Hoya.
Now comes Shane Mosley Jr., who crushed Jason Kelly in 51 seconds in his June 27 BKB (Big Knockout Boxing) match, before testing positive for amphetamines, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). The younger Mosley was supposed to fight on the undercard of his father?s August 29 rematch with Ricardo Mayorga but he will be off the event due to the failed test.
The post-fight positive test places the 24-year-old Mosley?s career in question until the NSAC decides on a punishment. Sporting a boxing record of 4-1, Mosley was also due to fight on this Saturday?s Sergey Kovalev-Nadjib Mohammedi undercard.
According to Dan Rafael, ?Mosley Jr. faces a hearing in front of the Nevada commission, at which time he will be allowed to explain the test results. He is likely to be given an extended suspension and fined a portion of his $25,000 purse. Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada commission, told ESPN.com?that the hearing probably would take place at the panel?s August or September meeting ?barring any attorney?s request for a continuance.?
