When Floyd Mayweather named Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield as possible opponents for his Sept. 12 scheduled fight, no one believes he was serious with his statement.
While Berto and Mayfield have good credentials and capable of giving Mayweather a good fight, they may not help in generating enough revenue for the unbeaten champ to end up with a financially viable fight. Mayweather is famous for turning his fights into blockbuster attractions and it would be very difficult for him to promote the fight with an opponent that has not fought in a pay-per-view (PPV) event. Unless Mayweather is contented with his record-breaking purse from the Pacquiao fight and wouldn’t care about being criticized for choosing an easy fight to preserve his unbeaten record, he won’t pick either Berto of Mayfield for his Sept. 12 fight. The logical choice for Mayweather would be Amir Khan. Aside from having figured in PPV events in the past, Khan has huge fans support in the UK. Many of them usually travels to the US to watch Khan fights. Khan has likewise developed a sizable group of supporters in the US where he figures in major championship fights. Mayweather will have to name his opponent in the next few days as he has to give way for the usual 60-day training period that boxers need to be in good shape on the day of the fight. Since he is fighting on Sept. 12, Mayweather is expected to name his opponent on July 12. Two things will work in Mayweather’s favor if he picks Khan for his next fight. First, he will be assured of high PPV numbers as Khan is exciting and enjoyable to watch in contrast with Mayweather’s boring style. Secondly, Mayweather has a high percentage of beating Khan, who has been knocked out twice in his pro career and another loss via split decision. Mayweather and Khan have fought common opponents including Zab Judah and Marcos Maidana. In both fights, Khan won over Judah via KO and against Maidana by unanimous decision. While Khan scored a KO against Judah, Mayweather settled only for a UD victory which makes Khan a worthy opponent.
