A purse bid for the welterweight title elimination bout between former titleholder Devon Alexander and former interim titlist Diego Chaves is scheduled for Thursday at the IBF offices in Springfield, New Jersey.
The winner of the bout, should both sides accept the terms of the purse bid and actually fight, will become the mandatory challenger for titlist Kell Brook of England. It would seem unlikely that the sides would make a deal before the purse bid, because Alexander is with adviser Al Haymon and Chaves is with Top Rank and they do not do business together, the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight notwithstanding.
Alexander (26-3, 14 KOs), 28, of St. Louis, has lost two of his past three fights, a one-sided decision loss to Amir Khan in December and a decision in a slightly more competitive bout against Shawn Porter. In between, Alexander outpointed journeyman Jesus Soto Karass.
Chaves (23-2-1, 19 KOs), 29, of Argentina, is 0-1-1 in his past two bouts, a draw with Timothy Bradley Jr. in December (in a fight most thought Bradley clearly won) and a ninth-round disqualification to Brandon Rios last August.
