When Manny Pacquiao returns to the ring early next year, he needs to give his fans a more exciting and enjoyable fight to compensate for the bland and boring fight he and Mayweather showed last month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight has generated over $500 million in gross revenues, the highest in boxing history. But the the record-breaking fight drew outrage from people who paid $99.00 to watch the fight on pay-per-view (PPV) and from those who bought tickets to watch the fight at the MGM Grand. Viewers were angered because Pacquiao did not disclose his injury prior to the fight, which could have cautioned bettors to take a second look at their bets. Pacquiao failed to give the fans the kind of entertainment and enjoyment that they wanted to see during the fight because of his injury. For hls part, Mayweather maintained a safe distance from Pacquiao throughout the fight, which prevented Pacquiao from engaging Mayweather in a toe-toe situation that many of the fans wanted to see. Lawsuits were filed against Pacquiao, Mayweather and the promoters for damages and for the return of the cost of their tickets. Pacquiao, who is recuperating from his surgery to repair his torn shoulder rotator cuff, is hoping Mayweather will grant him a rematch in order to fulfill his promise to fans that he will give them an exciting and enjoyable fight. But Mayweather says he is retiring after his Sept. 12 fight. Pacquiao can appease the fans if he can face former foe Juan Manuel Marquez for the fifth time. But Marquez said his fight plan is dependent on the result of his treatment for his damaged knee, which is still under therapy. Earlier, Marquez said he is open to a fifth fight against Pacquiao. “I still have the hunger, I still possess the ambition and I still have the fire. First and foremost I’m a fighter with the heart and the mentality of a fighter. I want that fifth Championship. For me hunger for success is the most telling factor,” Marquez said. Marquez is proud of his knockout victory over Pacquiao in 2012. He has previously stated that he won’t give Pacquiao a rematch. “I’ve been offered a lot of money for a fight with Pacquiao,? Marquez said ?But for me honor, prestige, and respect for a country comes first. And, why do a fifth fight? Considering we won,” he added. Pacquiao and Marquez fought for the first time in 2004 at the MGM Grand, where the Filipino star knocked down Marquez three times in the first round, but the Mexican stood his ground in the later rounds to get a draw verdict. In 2008, Pacquiao won via a split decision and in 2011, the two met again with Pacquiao winning via a majority decision. The last four fights between Pacquiao and Marquez were entertaining and enjoyable fights because they don’t run away like Mayweather does. They can fight toe-to-toe and the fans love it. While the fifth fight will not generate huge revenue compared to the Mayweather fight, it will be an exciting fight to watch.
