Trash talk could lead to Mayweather-Golovkin fight on Sept. 12

Pound-for-pound king and world’s highest-paid athlete Floyd Mayweather could be eyeing WBA middleweight champion Gennday Golovkin as his next opponent for his retirement fight scheduled for Sept. 12.

The possibility surfaced when Mayweather’s handlers broke their silence following Golovkin’s statement saying that he is 100 percent sure that he will beat Mayweather if he gets in the ring with him. Golovkin has been calling out Mayweather since last year saying he has the power and skill to beat him. Now GGG, as he is known to most fans, says he can put on a show for the fans in what could be another boring fight for Mayweather if he picks another opponent. “I know I can box like Floyd [Mayweather]. I can box smart. But that is boring for people,” says Golovkin. “I want to bring excitement. I want to bring drama show — people watch excitement, they want a show. HBO gave me a chance over two years ago. People love my style.” Now, Mayweather’s camp is issuing a response, saying, “Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd. It’s the biggest payday they could possibly have,” TMZ Sports writes. “[Golovkin] has never fought a top opponent in his whole career … we’re surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest,” they added. Mayweather is coming off a unanimous decision over Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao in a fight that grossed over $500 million, the highest in boxing history. Golovkin is fresh off his title fight against Willie Monroe last month to retain his WBA and IBO middleweight titles. He remains unbeaten in 33 fights.
