Marvin Sonsona shakes off ring rust against Jonathan Arrellano

Filipino boxing sensation Marvin Sonsona is set to face Mexican-American challenger Jonathan Arrellano in the undercard of the Robert Guerrero-Aaron Martinez fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California Saturday night.

Sonsona ((19-1-1, 15 KOs ) of General Santos City, Philippines has not fought since his split decision win against Welfrido Vasquez, Jr. in a rematch last June 7, 2014. Sonsona was unbeaten when he lost by KO against Vasquez in their first encounter in 2010. After 14 fights since he tuned pro in 2007, Sonsona must have been devastated with his first career loss prompting him to seek comfort among misguided friends and advisers who failed to give good advice and partly to blame for his career downturn. While he seemed to have lost appetite to fight actively to drum up his career, Sonsona managed to win all the fights that followed his first loss to Vasquez in 2010. For about three years, Sonsona fought only once a year until 2014 when he decided to fight twice. After avenging his loss to Vasquez, the young GenSan native must have realized that he needs to get his career on tract again as he tried to spend most of his time in the gym to get him in top shape for his next fight. Sonsona’s adviser Sampson Lewkowicz should be credited for getting Sonsona back on tract after nearly losing his promising boxing career. ?The glory and the fame damaged his personal life, with his very bad friends surrounding him before. Now he?s changed for the sport and I believe you will see this on Saturday,? said Lewkowicz. ?Today Marvin Sonsona is a totally different man. He grew up; he knows what he wants. He wants to be a world champion and bring to the Philippines what they deserve. A champion like Manny Pacquiao,? he added. Sonsona is a knockout artist having won 15 of his 19 pro fights via KO and it is likely that he will score another KO against Arrellano who has five defeats and two draws with only three wins via KO in his 22-fight career record. While Sonsona has to shake off the rust he has accumulated due to his inactivity, he was reported to be in top shape for the Saturday event having worked briefly with Angel ?Memo? Heredia for his physical conditioning at the Roy Jones Gym in Las Vegas.
