If Facebook and Twitter followings are any indication of an athlete or entertainer’s fanbase, Amir Khan is the third most popular active boxer on earth, behind Floyd and Manny of course.

Facebook followers (as of May 29, 2015)

Floyd Mayweather – 11 mil Manny Pacquiao 9.2 mil Amir Khan – 2.9 mil Klitschko Bros. – 1.7 mil Canelo Alvarez – 1.2 mil (two pages) Gennady Golovkin – 101,500

Twitter followers (as of May 29, 2015)

Floyd Mayweather – 6.2 mil Manny Pacquiao 2.5 mil Amir Khan – 1.6 mil Canelo Alvarez – 515,000 Klitschko Bros. – 199,000 Gennady Golovkin – 106,000

Sans the sport’s obvious two big guns, Amir Khan has, far and away, the largest following in Facebook and Twitter.

Imagine how popular Khan would be if he upset Floyd Mayweather?

Many of Khan’s followers live outside of the U.S. and U.K. and will not have access to Khan vs Algieri tonight but, rest-assured, they’d be able to watch Mayweather vs Khan should it happen later this year. Like Mayweather vs Pacquiao, Mayweather vs Khan would be broadcast in regions that typically don’t show a lot of boxing. Already, Amir Khan has something every fighter aspires to generate but few produce – A massive fan base.

And he’s every bit as well-known, on the international level, as Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao were heading into their respective bouts with Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 and 2008.

Khan is well aware a victory over Mayweather wouldn’t only enhance his already-hefty fanbase but would give him instant credibility and stardom in the U.S., Mexico and the Philippines. Simply put, Khan would be the hottest fighter in boxing and one of the most celebrated athletes in the world.

Did destiny beckon when Oscar De La Hoya handed boxing’s proverbial torch to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao?

If so, is destiny calling once more?

Tonight, Khan faces Chris Algieri. Will it be his last fight in a non-PPV setting?
