Comcast Corp., Home Box Office Inc., Showtime and DirecTV Inc. were sued by pay-per-view customers who claim they were ripped off by a failure to disclose boxer Manny Pacquiao had a shoulder injury going into his touted May 2 fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather won the 12-round bout on the unanimous decision of three fight judges. Only later was it revealed that Pacquiao had sustained a torn rotator cuff while training.
Four Illinois residents say they and others who paid $89 to $100 to watch the battle were duped by the failure to publicize the injury, according to a complaint filed Tuesday in Chicago federal court.
They?re claiming the companies that televised the fight, the boxers and their management companies should be forced to forfeit the estimated $300 million they made from the event.
Pacquiao and his promoter, Top Rank Inc., were also sued Tuesday by two Nevada residents in Las Vegas, where the fight was staged.
The case is Gomez v. Top Rank Inc., 15-cv-3982, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois (Chicago).
