ALA Boy Rocky Fuentes gets yet another crack at the RP title when he clashes with Manila-based Danilo Lerio on June 1 for the vacant Philippine flyweight title in Angono, Rizal.
The title had been declared vacant after erstwhile champion Jojo Bardon had won the OPBF flyweight title in Japan last March 18 with a split decision verdict over Masaharu Naganawa.
The Number two-rated Fuentes had previously lost to Bardon in a closely-contested showdown for the RP crown on March 18, 2006, and has since never looked back with five victories to his credit.
The former Olympian Lerio, who is ranked no. 1 by the GAB, has been unbeaten in 10 fights since absorbing a heart-breaking loss at the hands of Fuentes’ stablemate Along Denoy.
Lerio (13-1, 2 KO’s) overtook Fuentes in the rankings having been the more active fighter recently, scoring a breath-taking second-round technical knockout over the previously undefeated Apol Suico last March 3.
Fuentes versus Lerio will be a battle between two former amateur stars, each hoping to place their career again on the upswing.
On the undercard, RP junior fly champ Sonny Boy Jaro faces Danilo Pena in a non-title fight, while Denver Cuello takes on Rommel Bongon.
Also set to see action is Robert Lerio who will go up against Richard Olisa.
MASICAMPO, MARATAS TRIUMPH IN TUBIGON EVENT
Glen Masicampo of Harada Stable prevailed on a seventh-round technical knockout victory over Cris Alag in the mainer of last Saturday’s card promoted by Rajah Chris Boxing Promotion at the Tubigon Cultural Center in Tubigon, Bohol.
The event was the maiden card for promoter Chris Alturas, who will also be managing boxers from now on.
The win improved Masicampo’s record to 8 wins, 2 losses with 3 KO’s and lines him up for a stint against Korean Sung Dae Gang on May 19 at the Shinheung University in Uijeongbu City, Korea.
In the chief support, unbeaten Leon Maratas continued his winning streak with an eight-round unanimous decision over Roland Econas.
The win improved Maratas’ record to 7-0, 2 KO’s while Econas moved down to 5-10, 1 KO.
Nic Banal, the elder brother of young phenom AJ ‘Bazooka’ Banal, also prevailed on a six-round unanimous decision over Tiny Tyson.
