WORLD Boxing Foundation (WBF) welterweight champion Dondon “El Supremo” Sultan is set to make his first title defense against No.12 contender Hamza Issa of France on June 15 in Calais, France.
Sultan, who fights out of the SGG Boxing Stable, won his title over Eddie Delic of Australia last Nov. 25 at the Suntec International Convention Center in Singapore.
Aside from his belt, the future of his boxing career is being put on line in this fight as the 28-year-old native puncher from Labason, Zamboanga del Norte has trained his sights for lucrative fights in the US.
“I will give all my best in this fight because my future lies in here. If I lose in this fight, I would probably lose my chance to fight in the US. That is why losing is not an option in this fight,” Sultan told Sun.Star Cebu.
Issa, the current WBF Intercontinental champion, is expected to bring a tough fight to the Filipino puncher as he enjoys a homecourt advantage.
The French warrior also carries a seven-fight winning streak and has a 12-5-4 win-loss-draw record with five knockouts.
He won the WBF Intercontinental title after beating Turgay Uzan by unanimous decision in April last year. He made two successful defenses against Fabrice Colombel in October 2006 by unanimous decision and over Geroge Ungiadze also by unanimous decision last March 30.
Sultan, the former Pan-Asian Boxing Association welterweight champion, holds a 15-6-2 record with seven knockouts.
