CLEVELAND, Ohio – Boxing fans had to wait at least five years for Saturday’s upcoming bout between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
And if Mayweather wins convincingly over Pacquiao, what’s next for Mayweather? He has one more fight on his deal with CBS, and Mayweather has hinted that the last fight on his deal could be his last. If that’s the case, will Mayweather go out with a bang and sign an easy fight or will he close his career with a classic matchup?
Here’s a list of possible opponents Mayweather will consider for his next fight. Who would you like to see him fight?
Not as long as Pacquiao, but Amir Khan has been a possible Mayweather opponent for years. Khan would pose a threat because of his length and hand speed, but his glass jaw is also appealing to Mayweather, who could go out with a bang via knockout.
A fight with Timothy Bradley may also have interest. Bradley is a former champion who split two fights with Pacquiao. A fight with Bradley is appealing because he’s smaller than Mayweather and Bradley will get overwhelmed with Mayweather’s speed and sneaky power.
The biggest threat and the most exciting fight outside of Pacquiao is middleweight crusher Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs). “Triple G” is a devastating puncher to the head and body. This fight would mean the two fighters would meet at a 154 pound “catch weight” because Mayweather is 147 and Golovkin is 160.
Other possibilities include Sergio Martinez (51-3), Kell Brook (34-0), Keith Thurman (25-0) and Northeast Ohio’s own Shawn Porter (25-1-1)
