Geno?s Boxing Mailbag: Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather JR Edition

The world awaits no more. The superbout has come and gone and everyone seems to have mixed emotions. It seems that many believe that Oscar De La Hoya did enough to win, and have questioned my statements regarding the end result of the fight. I thought that Floyd won hands down and that the judge scoring it for Oscar must have been sniffing his sharpie marker that he used to mark the scorecard, but apparently he is not alone. Many people have apparently been sniffing sharpies. That is really an epidemic: Sharpie Sniffing.

Now, my mailbag has been dead for some time and it is not resurrected, but I thought that this fight and the responses that I?ve gotten merited a return of the bag. I typically keep my sack to myself nowadays, answering people individually, but now my shack is for the entire world to see, cherish, and think about for days.

Why are garbage men so damn lazy? I put out this trash barrel, and they said that it was too heavy to take? What has this country come to where a garbage man won?t take away the trash because they are too lazy, in my opinion. So, I was informed that I had to use 30 gallon barrels or whatever it is they said, and not the 45 gallon one that I purchased. They are so lucky that I?m not letting the anger side get the best of me. I was so close to beating them to a pulp. They are so lucky that I?m not much of a fighter, or I would have done it! I?m sorry?I just have issues with garbage men. They suck.

I just saw a movie called Alpha Dog and it starred Justin Timberlake and Fernando Vargas. It was difficult to look at them and pretend that they weren?t Vargas and Timberlake, but the movie was very good. It concerned a drug dealer trying to collect a debt and kidnaps the brother of the man that owed him the cash. Well, they get nervous and consider killing him. It is a very exciting movie with a lot of suspense and they even throw Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone into the film and both nail their parts. Even Vargas did a great job as the chubby bad ass. I give this film 3 out of 4 stars on the Geno Bambino Movie Review Rate-O-Matic.

Anyway, let?s get to the bag?

THE WORLD AWAITS

Dear Geno,

The surprises that you mentioned in your article gave credence to my earlier belief that the fight was a prearranged one. I mean there was indeed a fight but as to its form it was not really. All those hypes about this fight was just for the money. I was right when I said I would rather see a Pacquiao-Marquez fight than the dlHoya-Mayweather’s.

Ver

Ver,

Manny Pacquiao Vs. Juan Manuel Marquez is a great fight?one of the best in boxing. Now I don?t think that the bout was prearranged, but I will say that Floyd Mayweather could have done more to make a statement. He could have stopped De La Hoya, but he played it extremely safe and Oscar just couldn?t find him.

The fight was about money a great deal and I promise you that they cashed in like futher muckers (I can?t use profanity, so I have to improvise.) Prize fighting is about the prize and the prize is always money and they made a boatload in this fight.

Now, we can eagerly anticipate a showdown between the Filipino superstar and the man that drew the blue print to beat him, but time is of the essence. If JMM and Pacman don?t meet soon, they won?t meet at all.

Geno,

What the hell were you watching? You?re probably 90 years old with bad eyesight just like the judges that tried to score the fight. Who landed the most shots and who was the true aggressor 10-11 out of the 12 rounds? Watch that fight again and see where Mayweather landed a lot of his shots (on the wrist and gloves). I ask you, what is usually looked at to decide who wins? I think De La Hoya did what was supposed to be done to win. Floyd ran.

This bout is one of the many reasons why boxing has gone down hill. The shadiness behind the seen where money is dealt and people are paid off. You must have been too. I, like everybody else was hoping this would give some integrity back to boxing. It didn?t, it buried it. Never again will I pay for a boxing match and I think I speak for many other people.

Greg

Greg,

I am NOT 90 years young, as many elderly folk say. You see, I?m a big fan of elderly folk. They often wave at me when I enter Walmart and even though they are officially a greeter, they don?t have to be so nice. I?m 32 years old and my eyes are fine. The wife made me get them checked because she thought that my eyes were bad, but the Lenscrafters people said: ?Geno Bambino, you see just fine.? So, wrong on both counts.

Now, I was not impressed by the fight, by any means, but Floyd controlled it. He moved and threw his pot shots over the course of the 12 rounds, and really didn?t take any chances, but in no way did De La Hoya win this fight. I thought that De La Hoya won 4 rounds, but the others belonged to Floyd. And that 4 rounds won was generous.

Now, I don?t blame you for not wanting to buy another event because boxing is a hard sport to love, but the Miguel Cotto-Zab Judah bout coming up might make up for the inaction that we witnessed with De La Hoya and Mayweather.

Geno,

i think you was watching different fifght to me i gave mayweather only 4 maybe 5 rounds also are you sure brad pitt & george clooney wernt judges because it looked like a casino robbery

Steve Jones

Steve,

Well, it was in Las Vegas?the city of sin. You know, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, which is great. Sadly, I was married in Vegas, therefore anything that could have happened in Vegas, my wife would have known about it. Hell, I have a hard time keeping my subscription to Cinemax and HBO. I just think that that show about the Bunny Ranch in Nevada is entertaining, but my wife doesn?t understand and she is not a fan of the late night Cinemax entertainment, known as: Skinamax. So, to sum up: Brad Pitt & George Clooney and the Bunny Ranch and my wife. Hmmm?forget the summation. It didn?t make a whole lot of sense.

Now, I think that I watched the same fight, and I think that Floyd without question won the fight. He could have done a lot more, but I don?t think that there is a lot of question regarding the verdict outside of people that don?t understand the criteria to score a bout. Oscar was aggressive but it wasn?t affective and the cleaner shots landed were by Floyd.

Geno,

SHUT UP! Who are you to wrote those @$@#@$ words? You think Pretty Boy wins, ONLY YOU. Please review the tape.

Dzolan Roy G. Sabijon

Dzolan,

You shut up! Who am I? Who am I to write these words? I?m Geno @#@$#$@ Bambino Mother @#$@#! Review the tape? Review this!

Geno,

What a fight, a P4P king beating an oldie more by embrace and winning by a controversial split decision. Now I understand the sad state of boxing and boxing fanatics turn to the more exciting bouts of UFC.

Rolly C.

Rolly,

I am a boxing fan through and through and I cannot jump ship to the UFC/MMA regardless of what happens. Oh, maybe if Evander Holyfield unifies the heavyweight title again, I may realize that the world is ending and jump over to the octagon where guys in speedos settle the score. I would be more OK with the MMA if they didn?t fight in merely panties. I know that it?s the thing nowadays and not all of them wear them. Tank Abbott wore shorts, but a great deal of them elect to wear what I call ?leave nothing to the imagination? wear.

Geno,

With due respect, I would disagree with you regarding who is the real winnner. I would say that it would be better for the other two judges who scored for PBF to retire, instead. You know, there are so many instances in previous boxing matches that these two judges spoiled the results. Hopefully that would be the last one.

Another observation: I hope there will be NO REMATCH because if it happends, it would give credence to the speculations that ” The World Awaits” is one of the many boxing matches that was dicided in the table and not in the ring. IT IS A REAL DISAPPOINMENT

Valle Corro

Valle,

I don?t see a rematch happening, mainly because the demand would not be there as it was for this one and what would be Floyd?s motivation? He?s got money falling out of his ass. My uncle has money falling out of his ass?literally. Let me just put it this way: his idea about being the world?s first human slot machine did not go as planned.

I think that the 2 judges that scored it for Floyd had it right but ?Pretty Boy? isn?t earning any fans with his performances. He is just taking it easy and when he does just enough to win, he puts the audience to sleep. Look at his fight with Carlos Baldomir. That fight was the cure for insomnia, and perhaps it should have been an indicator of what we were going to see when he faced De La Hoya.

Hey Geno,

hey man good job with yo articles…Im a pinoy, no bashing here doncha worry man…anyway I thought the fight was ayt, I even expected it to be a freakishly boring fight but it wasn’t, but youre right on my man, pbf could’ve stopped the fight had he tried but he didnt, which was really disappointing. Thats the problem I guess with pbf he’s all talk and no walk, He’s all I’ll knock you here and there but he hits you nowhere man which is so disappointing as a fan, bottomline, I think that fight just killed boxing and made everyone a UFC fan ! Sad

Alexi

Alexi,

Thanks for the mad props and thanks for not bashing. I think that a lot of people were disappointed because of the massive amount of hype. I thought that the fight was OK?no classic, but interesting none the less.

Geno,

Are you smoking crack? Read your article on the fight. You have a lot to learn about boxing. You must take the title away from the champion. You cannot spend the entire 12 rounds running away and end up the winner and champion. I can go on and explain but honestly – don’t think you’d be able to undrestand. 😉

Nice site even though you don’t know the sport at all!

Rob

Rob,

I don?t think that I would be able to ?undrestand.? WTF does that mean? Congrats?you created a new word. Now, I don?t buy this crap that you have to take the title from the champion so much. Whoever wins the fight, wins the fight, and Floyd was not running the entire fight?he was boxing. What you should probably watch is tough man contests where guys just slug it out over the course of three rounds without skill because that seems your speed. ?Geno, you don?t undrestand boxing. Da guy that is bigger and stronger wins!? Come on Rob. If I do have a lot to learn about boxing, I?m sure that you are not the one that can teach me. Floyd ran away with this fight. He won the title. He defeated Oscar handily, but people love ?The Golden Boy? and want to give him the benefit of the doubt in rounds that are close and some that are not.

Geno,

I find it surprising that you consider one judge scoring 115-113 in favor of dela Hoya controversial. I firmly believe that with the current criteria of judging the fight, the Golden Boy indeed won by such margin.

Unfortunately, credit was not given to his body punching and his combinations upstairs and downstairs in the first half of the fight. Though most of the Golden Boy’s punches were blocked in those instances, a number of hard punches still landed which, in my opinion, should be sufficient to outweigh Pretty Boy’s few crisp and quite hard jabs in those rounds.

By the way, if Chuck Giampa is correct in scoring a win for PBF, his scoring of 119-109 in the Daniel Ponce de Leon – Gerry Penalosa WBO superbantam fight must be absurd ‘coz Penalosa even did better with his crisp punches in that fight than Floyd Mayweather against Oscar….

Anyway, this is Las Vegas boxing and anything can happen…

Saldy Lopez

Saldy,

De La Hoya had a plan in this bout and he could have won, I think, had he stuck to the jab but I think that he was concerned about the counter punches that were coming his way and the one time when he really cut loose with a barrage of punches, he was tagged with a right cross and staggered, which put him back in the mode of ?roughing up? PBF. I thought that Oscar was throwing some flashy, but rather meaningless punches and did not give 100% in there. He?s a warrior, sure, and I have a lot of respect for him, but he followed the game plan and if it worked, it worked.

To be honest, I was most disappointed in Floyd. He is not an all time great and it is due mostly to his own reluctance to apply himself in the ring. He could have stopped De La Hoya but chose to play it safe, and cruise to a decision. Unfortunately for the fans, it didn?t happen.

Las Vegas has been known to be the home for the bad decision, but in this case, 2 out of 3 judges got it right, but there is no way that a Pound for Pound Champ should even be in a debatable decision fight with a returning champion that was on the shelf for a long time. It should have been a blowout.

Geno,

I pretty much agree with all of your comments about this bout. I was a little disappointed with your statement about safe rather than sorry. I like to see KOs as much as the next fan, but boxing is the art of hit and don’t get hit. I also wish that you or someone would comment on the obvious bias the HBO commentators displayed Saturday night. They all left objectivity by the wayside shamelessly and someone should make not of it! They did not once mention either of the 2 times that de la Hoya’s legs buckled from Mayweather shots. And Larry Merchant’s handling of post fight interviews with both fighters once again shamelessly displayed his bias. I see no need for a rematch nor do I see a need for Mayweather to recklessly put his chin in harm’s way to satisfy viewers or commentators. He took several very hard shots from Oscar and displayed good whiskers. He also hit Oscar with great shots that did not drop him…so why try to impress viewers when it’s clear that no way Oscar can beat him if he uses all of his abilities. Why not use all at his disposal to win?

Fred Tyson

Fred,

You make a valid point. Both Lampley and Merchant are either on the De La Hoya payroll or are so infatuated with ?The Golden Boy? that they cannot call a fight objectively. I thought that Lampley?s call of the Marco Antonio Barrera-Juan Manuel Marquez fight was even worse! Merchant definitely was rooting for De La Hoya and now I?m glad that they?re giving him his walking papers. What fight was he watching and I truly think that your point explains much of the hate mail that I?m getting. People believe what they hear and they hear Lampley and Merchant saying in unison: ?Oscar is winning!?

Personally, I have always been a fan of Larry Merchant, but he let me down in this fight. F him. Now, I agree with you that boxing is about hitting and not getting hit, but boxing is also business my friend. Do you think that Mike Tyson would have been the billionaire he should have been had he not KO?d his opponent? Look at Roy Jones, JR. For most of his career, he couldn?t draw flies. I didn?t see many people during the early years of Chris Byrd?s career screaming for him and filling the stadiums. Joe Mesi on the other hand was a major attraction because he fulfilled the boxing fan?s need for controlled violence.

Floyd has to look at this situation like this: a win is a win or a KO is big money. If he KO?d Oscar, he would be in a new league, but now he is right where he was before the fight. He is in ?who cares?? land and still has not earned the following from the entertainment side. So, Fred, there is something to be said about winning impressively. That is why Felix Trinidad was such a huge attraction. He knocked his opponent out or got KO?d trying.

Geno,

hey man i disagree with you its like you are totally against de la hoya. They both did well and it was a hard decicion but it was not totalyy just mayweather they bot had some good hits.

Jesus

Jesus,

I am actually pro-De La Hoya, but I also call it like I see it. He certainly has had a great career, never really ducked anyone, and realized that his boxing legacy was important. He will be remembered and has erased his embarrassing loss to Bernard Hopkins, although I don?t think that many people still hold that against him. He wasn?t meant to be a middleweight.

De La Hoya landed a couple good shots, but most were deflected. I thought that he was pretty ineffective, but I still have a great deal of respect for him, and I think that he should still fight. He?s still got a lot left.

hey gee…

hey geno, do you still visit pacland? i dont see any of your posts there, but about the fight, do you think that the more accurate punches of mayweather did enough to make him win the fight? most of the times, the champion just needs to be aggressive in order to win a match, (as what i’ve witnessed with Ponce and Penalosa’s fight)

i think oscar was agressive enough to keep the belt… sorry this is actually not a comment bout your article, but i dont have to coz i like all of your articles… if it ok to ask more questions, here are two more… what do think about BoomBoom’s chances on beating Ponce? and do you think Andre Berto is ready for PBF? I like the way he fights… he always goes for the kill… he cuts the ring well and has bad intentions with every punch, unlike PBF whose punches appears to be bitchslaps… well most of them. thanks for the time dude… more success to you.

Jeff

Jeff,

I do check out Pacland quite often, but unfortunately, my other job outside of writing about the sport has really limited the use of the net and most things are blocked. I do think that Floyd was the affective aggressor and that is what counts. Oscar did some things at times that were effective but he was inconsistent and Floyd?s ?Bitchslapping? told the tale. I don?t think that many boxers that have faced Mayweather consider his punches bitchslapping. I consider him an average puncher with great skill.

Boom Boom is all heart and has a big punch and tenacity. When he fights Daniel Ponce De Leon, it will be a huge war, but at this time, I would probably lean towards Boom Boom to eke out a decision. What a fight though! That is one of the most exciting potential fights in boxing.

Well, Dude, thanks to you and thanks to Pacland and the Paclanders for supporting ?The Boxing Show? and my articles. Your support is very appreciated!

Hi Geno,

i really find it disturbing to hear the announcer say that mayweather won the fight. it is an insult to the fight fan, Dela Hoya clearly has some hidden agenda…. maybe thinking of a million dollar rematch. this are the kind of fights and decisions that are killing boxing as a sport… Dela Hoya should be band in boxing as a promoter for fixing a fight. i for one will never be an avid fan of boxing anymore…

more power and lots of thanks.

ian Ian,

What is going on dude? I hope that this bout didn?t spoil your love of the game. I thought that the decision was just but the fight itself wasn?t that eventful. It was a chess match with Floyd being too fresh and quick for the older lion to catch. Also, De La Hoya didn?t want to be flattened himself, so he stayed on the same road throughout the bout and hoped for the best. The bogus split decision puts some intrigue, perhaps, into a rematch. I don?t think that there was any fight fixing going on, but the lovefest hat many have for Oscar obviously tainted one of the cards and the minds of many of the fans.

Anyway, that is it for the mailbag. I appreciate the comments both good and bad and no matter what, the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight created a buzz in the boxing world. I enjoyed the hype and the fact that the world did in fact talk about this fight. We haven?t had that in quite some time and hopefully it creates a domino effect where everyone gets interested in the sport again. It?s a great sport?some of the time, and with Wladimir Klitschko-Lamon Brewster II, and Zab Judah-Miguel Cotto on the horizon, boxing has some potential to move up the ranks of sports?right above roller derby. Do you hear me roller derby? We?re coming for you!!!
