Zamboanga City – Genuine Opposition senatorial bet Loren Legarda on Monday threw her support for the rival of boxing hero Manny Pacquiao.
The beneficiary of the support was reelectionist Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio, who is running for the congressional post of the first district of South Cotabato against Pacquiao.
?You know, politics is not just about popularity. While popularity is a plus, people are hungry, will popularity give them food? Will popularity bring down the cost of medicine? Will popularity restore law and order or give roads or bridges?” Legarda asked.
While popularity is important, Legarda said competence and track record are equally important.
?Sabi ko kakayanan at sinserdidad at integridad. I am not saying that her opponent doesn’t have it, all I am saying is that a person who has track record has the upperhand because they can see what you can do and what you have done,” she said.
Legarda is going to General Santos City Monday to support Custodio’s candidacy, technically junking the bid of Pacquiao who is running under the Team Unity.
Pacquiao is a Filipino boxing hero who knocked out challenger Jorge Solis in the eighth round in San Antonio, Texas last month while Custodio is a member of the powerful political clan in the district who is seeking her last and third term.
It is widely believed that Pacquiao was prodded by Malacanang to run against Custodio, who supported the impeachmnent complaint against the President. – GMANews.TV
