“FREE THINKER’S” THOUGHTS ON MEGA-BOUT
Ogdensburg, N Y- Boxing is a business, and the fight this Saturday night between Oscar De La Hoya (38-4-0, 30 KOs) and Floyd Mayweather (37-0-0, 24 KOs) is the business being pursued to a top (spell that elite) position. Promotion has been raised to a new level, bringing in vast numbers of neophyte fans that have never before entertained themselves by watching such a spectacle. If you listen to the promoters it is the greatest thing to come along since Viagra.
THIS FIGHT TRULY HAS GREAT POTENTIAL
Once you get past all the hoopla though, and get down to the nitty-gritty, it really does not have the potential to be a great fight. Oscar has been a top fighter for a decade and more, but Father Time catches up with everyone sooner or later. Oscar is past his prime, while Floyd Mayweather is about as on top of his game as he can be. Although Floyd’s hands may not be the fastest in the world, they surely are not far from it. Oscar’s head movement is not that fast, and his body is even slower. In recent matches Oscar has ran low on steam by mid-fight, while Floyd seems to have no problems at all with stamina.
CAN OSCAR IMPOSE HIS WILL HERE?
I expect a couple of rounds of a feeling out process with the match starting to go Floyd’s direction as the rounds progress. Then Floyd’s hand speed will begin to take its toll on Oscar. As Oscar is not a bleeder nor prone to cuts, I expect to see the match go the distance with the final result being a unanimous decision for the speedster Floyd.
BELIEVE IN FLOYD, BUT DON’T BELIEVE FLOYD!
Although I don’t really believe him, Floyd says this is his last match. One of the last guys to say that is now Oscar’s partner in Golden Boy Promotions, as he continues to fight (Bernard Hopkins) and is a champion in the light heavyweight division. If Floyd wants to become the Midwest representative of Golden Boy, he has to kick Oscar’s butt first. That’s what the last guy did!
