Floyd Mayweather has been forced to take a break from sparring in the build-up to his super-fight with Manny Pacquiao after suffering a split lip.
The 38-year-old American will meet his long-time Filipino rival in Las Vegas on May 2 in what is widely expected to be the richest fight in boxing history.
But Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has claimed his fighter’s opponent has seen his preparations interrupted after taking one too many blows to the head.
“He couldn’t spar for a few days because his lip was cut,” Arum said. “They had to manufacture a special headgear that covered his lip because every time Floyd got hit, it bled.”
Pacquiao’s training regime has also been disrupted in the build-up to a fight that has been over five years in the making.
The 36-year-old, who has an aversion to needles, opted only to run and not do any gym work after a blood test carried out by the US Anti-Doping Agency.
