The media saga unfolding (in what feels like a penultimate war) between this era’s transcendent superstars Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, is starting to reach a crescendo.
Yesterday, Freddie Roach, the mercurial and cantankerous trainer of “Pac-Man”, made international headlines when he termed the fight between his Filipino action fighter and Mayweather as “good vs. evil”. Assuming he feels Pacquiao is a boxing version of a Jedi Knight, this means Mayweather must be a Sith Lord.
Consider today’s remarks from Mayweather Sr. as the return of the dark side.
“Everything is on target,” stated a confident Mayweather Sr., as reported by Steve Carp of the Las Vegas Review Journal. “He [Floyd] is physically stronger than he’s been. We trained hard from the start and he’s got a fast right hand working. Its so fast, Pacquiao is going to feel like he’s getting jabbed, Floyd’s going to hit him so often with the right.”
The father of “Money” has been quiet in the wake of Roach, who has been as offensive verbally as his charge is in the ring, and still isn’t responding to who he refers to as “The Joke Coach, Freddie Roach”. He had absolutely nothing to say on the podium at the press event, and wore a blank expression as Roach told his son “we’re going to kick your ass”.
There was growing perception that perhaps Floyd put an edict in place for the fight to remain silent, knowing that anything he says in a legacy fight of this magnitude can be used against him. But just because Sr. has avoided a major network camera like ESPN, Showtime or CBS, doesn’t mean he won’t possibly incriminate himself when a cell phone camera is placed in front of him.

Anyway, according to Floyd’s uncle Jeff, his nephew’s focus for the May 2nd superfight has been out of this world.

For the greats of the game, extraordinary effort and focus is what separates them from ordinary (or even very good) fighters. Mayweather has already told the world that he’ll make the dynamic southpaw Pacquiao look “ordinary”. And in a few weeks, remote controls will be aimed at flatscreens, as the “buy” button will be pressed for $100 to see if “Money” can show us.
