Tonight at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan, the WBC is putting on three championship fights in different weight divisions. In the main event WBC Bantamweight Champion Hozumi Hasegawa, 21-2, 7 KO?s, will be making his fourth title defense, since capturing the title two years ago against the tough veteran Thai fighter Veeraphol Sahaprom. Hasegawa is scheduled to face the undefeated South African, Simpiwe Vetyeka, 16-0, 9 KO?s. This will be Vetyeka first championship fight and his biggest challenge to date.
The co-feature has fast rising WBA Super Flyweight Champion Nobuo Nashiro, 9-0, 5 KO?s, making his second title defense, since knocking out Martin Castillo last year. He is scheduled to face the Venezuelan, Alexander Munoz, 29-2, 27 KO?s, who is looking to get back his title that he had lost to Martin Castillo. Munoz won the title back in 2002, but lost it to Castillo two years later by unanimous decision. Then lost the rematch in a closely scored split decision. This may be Munoz last shot at a world title.
The under card features the sensational undefeated perfect record and WBA Super Featherweight Champion Edwin Valero, 21-0, 21 KO?s, looking for his third straight knockout in a championship fight, when he faces Nobuhito Honmo, 29-4-2, 5 KO?s. Valero won the title last August 2006 against Vicente Mosquera, surviving a knockdown to rally back and score a KO win to capture the title. January 2007, Valero scored a first round KO in his fist title defense against Michael Lozada. Honmo carries more experience, but lacks the power that his southpaw champion carries and his record proves it.
Teiken Promotions along with the WBC is hoping for a great showdown in these three championship fights. Japan has always been proud of the championship bouts they display. This evening three young champions will get a chance to display their talents but will be facing three durable challengers who strive for that same goal, to become champion.
