Marco Antonio Barrera was looking forward to his stay at Oscar De La Hoya’s house and training in the cool mountain air. Especially enjoyable were the morning runs along scenic Big Bear Lake.
But all that ended abruptly Tuesday when the local sheriff’s department in the resort community of Big Bear, Calif., asked residents and guests to evacuate. The raging wildfires that have been gobbling up huge chunks of Southern California were still about 25 miles away, but there was significant risk of smoke inhalation.
So Barrera and his entourage said adios to Big Bear, packed up and headed for San Antonio nearly two weeks earlier than planned. Barrera, whose featherweight showdown with Manny Pacquiao is scheduled for Nov. 15 at the Alamodome, arrived in the Alamo City late Wednesday.
