Donnie Nietes just fought last Saturday but expect him to be back inside the ring in less than four months.
The lineal world light flyweight champion is slated for a mandatory defense against former unified world minimumweight champion Francisco Rodriguez Jr. on July 4 according to his promoter, Michael Aldeguer.
Rodriguez, 21, is best known for winning the WBO world minimumweight title by stopping Nietes’ stablemate Merlito Sabillo in 2014. He later defeated Katsunari Takayama to unify the WBO and IBF world titles in the same year.
“He’s a good opponent not to be overlooked,” Nietes told GMA News Online.
“I might take a rest for a week then get back to the gym. There will be enough time for training [for Rodriguez].”
Rodriguez holds a record of 17-2-1 with 11 knockouts and is the no. 1 contender to Nietes’ WBO world light flyweight title. – RAF, GMA News
