Filipino Bert Batawang will get a crack at a possible world title fight this year as he takes part in the 12-round eliminator for the IBF light-flyweight title on May 26 against Mexican Francisco Rosas at the Anaheim Arena in California.
This was bared the other day by Batawang’s manager Sammy Gello-ani in a press conference held at the Marriott Hotel in Cebu City.
Batawang versus Rosas will be on the undercard of the much-anticipated Joan Guzman-Michael Katsidis unification battle as well as the Oscar Larios-Jorge Linares world featherweight title showdown.
IBF Championship Chairman Lindsey Tucker, in an email to this writer, confirmed yesterday the Batawang-Rosas bout, saying that the Mexican’s handlers are ready to face the Filipino hard puncher.
Batawang (50-6, 34 KO’s) is coming off a five-bout winning spree which he won on stoppages, capped by a fourth-round TKO over Indonesia’s Sofyan Efendi last February 24.
Rosas (23-4-1, 12 KO’s), nicknamed ‘Chiquita,’ holds the Mundo Hispano light-flyweight title and has not lost via knockout in his pro career.
