MANILA, Philippines — The only thing Filipino ring superstar Manny Pacquiao can do well is punch. And celebrated trainer Freddie Roach has absolutely nothing to do with it.
That is as far as Floyd Mayweather Sr. is concerned.
Pacman is a real puncher, a guy who can take you out with just one shot, Mayweather told boxingconfidential.com s Michael Marley on Tuesday. That is why they call him the Pacman because he packs a punch. Now that s the only thing he can do well but he does it very well.
Mayweather, father of highly regarded Floyd Jr. who is slated to battle Oscar De La Hoya in a megabuck bout on May 5 in Las Vegas, then took a jab at Pacquiao, this year s best fighter, and Roach, the two-time Trainer of the Year awardee.
Pacman can t box, said Mayweather. Pacman got terrible defense. And he won t get better with Joke Coach Roach. The Joke Coach can t show him nothing. But Pacman got the punch.
Roach took a break from supervising De La Hoya s training in Puerto Rico to be at Pacquiao s corner when the Filipino knocked out Mexican challenger Jorge Solis in the eighth round on April 14 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Mayweather is lining up his new prized ward, unbeaten WBO 130-pound champion Joan Guzman, among Pacquiao s growing list of probable opponents.
But Guzman must first prove himself against Michael Kastidis in Anaheim, California, on May 26 to get a legitimate crack on Pacquiao, who is leaning toward a rematch with either WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez or future Hall of Famer Marco Antonio Barrera on Sept. 15.
I think that Guzman can beat the Pacman down the line, said Mayweather. But nobody should take the Pacman lightly. You can t drop your hands when you fight a guy like the Pacman.
