The 30 year-old pound for pound best boxer in the world didn?t back away from that statement when asked on Tuesday during a media conference call whether he was still going to retire after his ?The World Awaits? clash with Oscar De La Hoya on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
?I feel that I have nothing else to prove in the sport,? he replied. ?I?ve done what I have to do. From 130 all the way up to 154, I feel I beat the best they put in front of me. I?m comfortable. I made a lot of money in the sport. I?m happy, my kids are happy. These are the valuable years in my kid?s life. I want to spend a lot of time with my kids. Take my promotion company to the next level.?
Mayweather 37-0 (24) said that his new goal would be to establish himself as a boxing promoter to rival De La Hoya?s own Golden Boy Promotions.
?I feel that Oscar is going to be competing again in the future,? he said, ?not just in the ring as of right now, but we are going to be competing as far as promoters. I feel it is not going to be like Bob Arum and Don King, hopefully we will have a lot better relationship. When I say a lot better relationship, as far as when we see each other we shake hands, smile, go out to eat and put on big fights together and when we turn our backs, it won?t be ?I hate him? or ?I hate Floyd Mayweather?. I understand that it is a business and I understand what I have to do on May 5, that?s my job and I?m the best at going out there and putting on the gloves. One thing you can?t take away from Floyd Mayweather and one thing that I can do ? I can fight. You can?t take that away from me.?
