Emotional, high-strung, verbose and arrogant. That’s what his friends say about high profile trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.. But, although many believe he should get a check up from the neck up, the man never bites his tongue. In a world full of soft-soapers who use euphemisms and talk around a subject, Floyd Joy Mayweather ought to get some props for his refusal to walk the corporate or party line.
You ask FJM Sr. a question, then you get a rapid-fire answer straight, no chaser. It’s all fast and free-form like a Charles Mingus recording.
So it is with the May 5 Super Fight in Las Vegas between his son, Little Floyd (I bet PBF hates it when he’s called that), and the ring superstar who Floyd Sr. trained for six years, Oscar De La Hoya. Floyd Joy Mayweather is nobody’s Tom, nobody’s toady or backscratcher and he wants the world to know while “The World Awaits” that he is fearful that his son is likely to become a crime victim inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. No thug, real or faux, likes to be called “Vic” as in “victim.”
Simply put, Pretty Daddy believes that his son needs a landslide victory to go home with a decision after 12 rounds. PBF may play a thug on HBO’s 24/7 prefight hype shockumentary but his own father believes there might be a robbery in progress at the judges’ ringside positions.
So enlighten us, Floyd Joy, what’s up with the negative vibes?
“I haven’t been over to Little Floyd’s camp in four days,” Mayweather told me in a lengthy convo Monday night. “I’m too busy with my own fighters, including my new guys, world champ Joan Guzman and young prospect Argenis Mendez,. My light heavyweight champ, Chad Dawson, he’s due into Vegas tonight also. So my hands are full.
“But, let’s tell it like it is, Oscar is the promoter of this fight,” Mayweather said. “Oscar is the one who is paying everybody in the building. So that’s why Little Floyd has got to beat Oscar’s ass…I mean really beat his ass. Make no mistake, I want my son to win this fight. I’m with my son 100 percent on this one but I got to speak out now.
“If a round is anywhere near being close, they will give it to Oscar. Little Floyd can’t let that happen. He’s got to dominate, which I know he can do because I taught him how to do it. He’s got to make it so they can’t steal no rounds from him,” Mayweather said.
“Little Floyd cannot leave it to chance. Oscar, he is The Man around here. Oscar, he is the one with the big knot (money). He’s got so much money, Oscar, that it is sick and yet and still he is a tight ass (cheap). They say money talks and bullshit walks. I hope Oscar’s money don’t talk so loud that my son gets robbed that night!”
I’ve had many different thoughts and conceptions of the mercurial Floyd Joy Mayweather , Sr., but I must admit I never regarded him as a crimefighter before. Most ex-felons and former drug dealers are not members of your block’s Crime Watch group if you get my drift.
Now comes FJM Sr., sounding the siren to prevent a calamitous ring robbery in which Floyd Joy’s pride and joy, his own son, would be the robbee. I tell you the man is being preventative, trying to take a bite out of boxing crime before it happens…if he keeps this up, McGriff the crime dog may have competition. It’s a ruff, ruff crowd, I’ll tell ya.
